Surfing in Tahiti
Along with some of the most pristine beaches in the world, Tahiti also offers its visitors a fine array to water sports to indulge themselves in. From sailing to scuba diving and surfing, there is plenty in the way of having fun in the waters of Tahiti. A great place to visit is the Aquatica Dive Centre at the Inter-Continental Tahiti Beachcomber Resort. Offering scuba diving, snorkeling, water skiing and kayak rentals, this center is popular with both locals as well tourists.
If you enjoy spending time in the water, then Tahiti is the place to be. Here surfing is one of the most popular activities on the beach; with some very good surf breaks found all over the island. Highly acclaimed by surfers from all over the world, surfing in Tahiti is most definitely a great experience. On the northern coast of the island, you will find some good breaks at Matavai Point and Point Venus, while on the southern coast are the popular breaks Papara and Fisherman’s Point. If you are an avid surfer then head on down to the south coast of Tahiti Iti to experience the fantastic breaks at the Big and the Small Pass.
If you’d like to learn how to surf or just brush up on your surfing techniques, then there are several surf schools in Papeete especially, where one can learn the art of ‘hanging ten.’ These schools usually have shops as well from where you can rent out a surf board and other equipment like wet suits, etc.
For professional surfers, world class surfing can be found on Teuhupoo in Tahiti. This beach also holds the Billabong Pro Championships in May here every year, with some of the biggest waves on the island.
Surfing Seasons in Tahiti
There are two surf seasons in Tahiti, one that lasts from October to March, where the waves are more consistent, but smaller, and the second season that is from April to September. During this period the surf is first class with powerful hollow waves to ride on. This is the best time to surf in Tahiti.
