Getting Around in French Polynesia

Getting Around in French Polynesia Beautiful, mysterious and exotic, French Polynesia is an adventurer’s dream vacation. Made up of the 5 archipelagoes of the Society Islands, Austral Islands, Gambier Islands, Tuamotu Islands and the Marquesas Islands, this overseas French territory has a total of 83 atolls and 35 islands. Running in a chain-like formation from northwest to southeast, these islands are scattered over a vast area, giving each archipelago its own unique identity.

Since most of the islands here are spread far apart, the best way to get from one island to the next is by boat, airplane or helicopter. A helicopter is an expensive travel option, so watch out as it can put a serious dent in your wallet. However, if you are up for a luxurious vacation then it is a fantastic alternative to go for, as it provides some unbelievable views along the way. There is just one chartered helicopter service company that provides inter-island travel in French Polynesia.

For those who can afford it, a short airplane ride is a quick way to get from island to island. Both Air Tahiti and Air Moorea run a domestic flight service that caters to inter-island travel. Air Tahiti flies to around 38 islands, while Air Moorea operates from Tahiti to Moorea and Tetiaroa. A comfortable way to travel, there are regular flights to most of the key islands one wishes to visit. There are also independent charter flight services that one can use. If you do decide to island hop by plane, try and get an air pass from Air Tahiti, which offers reduced fare cards. With these cards you can get a pretty good discount on air fare, especially if you are traveling with more than one family member. These cards are issued in French Polynesia only.

The best and cheapest way to get from island to island is by boat or ferry. There are plenty of inter-island boat companies with regular routes to all of the five archipelagoes. Catch a catamaran ride, or if it’s within your budget go for a luxury cruise to get from island to island. A great way to travel, a boat trip lets you take in some truly spectacular sights along the way. Boats leave from Papeete on a regular basis to the various surrounding islands.

On most of the islands, the best way to travel or get around is by ‘Le Truck’, a local bus service. Both reliable and affordable, a typical fare costs US$ 2 person. Avoid using taxis when in French Polynesia as they can be very expensive. If you do wish to travel around on your own, rent a car, scooter or a bicycle, but don’t forget to read your rental agreement properly, including the fine print.
